Self-service BI promises speed: a team can explore without waiting for every chart to enter a central queue. The trouble starts when each department builds its own version of revenue, active customers or churn.
Govern shared meaning
Create a small set of certified measures and dimensions that business teams can reuse. Write down what each measure includes, which date it uses and who owns changes. In Power BI, a well-designed semantic model can give different reports a common foundation; it still requires active stewardship.
Give people room to explore beyond the shared core. An analyst may create a temporary segmentation or test an alternative assumption. Label exploratory work clearly so it is not mistaken for the official number. Promotion to a certified metric should include review of logic, quality and impact on existing reports.
Make the easy path the trusted path
Publish examples, a searchable catalog and a simple way to request new measures. If the approved model is difficult to access, teams will build around it. Keep permissions appropriate to the data, especially when a report can be exported or shared broadly.
Resolve disagreement openly
When finance and marketing report different customer acquisition costs, compare definitions before choosing a “winner.” They may use different cohorts or cost categories for valid reasons. Record the difference and decide which measure supports which decision. Consistency is not forcing every question into one number; it is making the meaning of each number explicit.
